Historians suggest that the coin toss originates from ancient Rome, when it was referred to as ‘heads or ships’. It has become a tradition of many sporting events, such as football, cricket and rugby, and in some cases has even been employed to decide the outcome of an international sporting event. At the 1969 FA Cup final, the seven-sided 50p coin used to determine who started the match upheld a sporting tradition, whilst also representing a historic change for the United Kingdom’s currency. Introduced the same year it was used in the iconic football tournament, the 50p coin also was part of the wider act of decimalisation, when the UK adopted a new decimal currency.
