Regularly featured in film, television and works of fiction, as both a hulking protagonist and fearsome antagonist, Tyrannosaurus is one of the most famous dinosaurs to have roamed the planet. Nevertheless, besides its monstrous size and formidable characteristics, the details of this predator from a lost world are far less well known.

1. The first known Tyrannosaurus remains were found in the United States in an area known as Seven Mile Creek in Wyoming.
2. Barnum Brown, a legendary fossil hunter of the early twentieth century, discovered the incredible specimen in 1900.
3. Scientist Henry Fairfield Osborn named the newly discovered creature Tyrannosaurus, which means ‘tyrant lizard’.
4. The bones were sold to London’s Natural History Museum in the 1960s where they have remained ever since.
5. Tyrannosaurus could grow more than 12 metres long and weighed around 6.5 tonnes.
6. Tyrannosaurus lived between 68 and 66 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period.
7. With its fearsome teeth and formidable size, Tyrannosaurus was one of the most fearsome predators of its time.
8. Despite its hulking size and terrifying appearance, Tyrannosaurus could only run at a top speed of just 15 miles per hour.
9. With a bite three times stronger than that of a lion, Tyrannosaurus could consume as much as 75 kilogrammes of meat in a single day.
10. The skull of Tyrannosaurus was more than 1.5 metres long with jaws that housed more than 50 teeth up to 30 centimetres in length.
