Sovereign 2025

  • Full Sovereign Collection for 2025 includes commemorative, bullion and historic ranges.
  • From 2026 all gold Sovereigns will return to being crafted from yellow gold.
  • Collection includes remastered design to mark the 200th Anniversary since the 1825 Royal Arms Sovereign was introduced.
  • For the first time in the Sovereign’s history, The Royal Mint will also be producing a silver Sovereign.

3rd October 2024: New designs and plans for the future of the Sovereign have today been unveiled by The Royal Mint, including several firsts and lasts for the globally recognised coin.

The 2025 Collection, available to purchase later this year, will be the last opportunity for collectors and investors to own a Sovereign made from rose gold. From 2026, all Sovereigns struck by The Royal Mint will be crafted from yellow gold, returning to its 500-year-old roots.

The 2025 Sovereign commemorative coin range also features two classic Sovereign designs; Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the dragon, and Jean Baptiste Merlen's Royal Arms which celebrates the 200th anniversary since its first appearance in 1825.

For the first time in the Sovereign’s history, The Royal Mint will produce a silver Sovereign. The new addition to the Collection is the same diameter and weight to its gold counterpart and is produced from 999 Fine Silver. Both silver Sovereigns will feature Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon design, with one also featuring a special privy mark in tribute to the 1825 Royal Arms Sovereign’s 200th anniversary.

Silver Sovereign

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said, “Trusted by coin collectors globally, the Sovereign has a rich and fascinating history – and this year’s collection marks a new chapter in its story. We’re excited to announce its return to yellow gold from next year and launch the first ever silver Sovereign, which makes this iconic coin more accessible for all collectors over the world.”

The Sovereign Collection also features Full, Double, Half and Quarter editions of the Bullion Sovereign. Struck in 22 carat gold, with its weight guaranteed to five decimal places, the 2025 Bullion Sovereign retains its status as one of the most tightly specified coin in the world.

Andrew Dickey, Director of Precious Metals at The Royal Mint said, “The Sovereign remains a top choice for investors and collectors alike. Its trusted and timeless nature is backed by the strength of its heritage, which makes it a solid investment to diversify portfolios.”

The Sovereign gold bullion is renowned for its strength and reliability. It’s also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents due to its status as legal British currency.

The full 2025 Sovereign Collection will be available from The Royal Mint’s website in November.
