- The Royal Mint launches Through the Looking-Glass commemorative coin featuring Tweedledum and Tweedledee, on the 150th anniversary of the publication of the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
- To celebrate, The Royal Mint has partnered with EL&N bakery to create a limited-edition range of intricately designed cakes inspired by the commemorative £5 crown
- The coin, which is the second to launch in the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland collectors’ series, launches on Monday 2nd August
- The one-of-a-kind cakes are also available from Monday 2nd August in EL&N’s stunning cafés across London for a limited time only
The Royal Mint, the original maker of UK coins, has today launched their latest commemorative coin, celebrating Through the Looking-Glass on official UK coin. Following the popularity of the first coin in the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland series, launched last month, a tasty tribute to the beautiful design of the coin has emerged from another original maker – EL&N Bakery.
Inspired by the commemorative £5 crown which features Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the intricately designed cakes draw upon the vivid details and colours used by the Original Maker to immortalise Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations of the book published 150 years ago onto the coin.
The limited-edition, delectable cakes will be available in EL&N bakeries across London from Monday (2nd August). Those indulging can celebrate the launch of the second in the two-coin Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland collectors’ series by creating their own Mad Hatter’s Tea Party with a beautiful queen of hearts cookie sandwich, a delicious mousse with heart cake, a heart themed financier and a special chocolate coin tart topped off with a replica of the Tweedledum and Tweedledee coin itself.
Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said: “Just like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass is a classic story, loved by all generations and has stood the test of time given how popular it is today, 150 years on since the first publication.
“We’ve had so much fun working with EL&N to create a collection of limited-edition Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland themed cakes to help celebrate the launch of the second coin in the collection, Through the Looking-Glass, and we hope that customers enjoy the sweet treats as much as collectors have loved the commemorative coins so far.”
The four delicious cakes that will be on offer are:
- Queen of Hearts Cookie Sandwich, made with shortcrust biscuit with rose ganache filling and raspberry compote
- Chocolate Coin Tart, a vanilla and pineapple filled tart with a red and yellow glaze
- Hart Mousse, a pistachio mousse with a red raspberry heart
- Blue Financier, a chocolate financier and caramel mousse with a blue velvet spray
Launched in base metal (known as brilliant uncirculated), and also available in gold and silver, and special colour edition, the Through the Looking-Glass keepsake is part of a two-coin collectors’ series by The Royal Mint designer Ffion Gwillim and Sculptor Emma Noble.
The first coin launched earlier this summer featuring Alice and the Cheshire Cat – the £5
crown provides an ideal canvas to recreate the iconic illustrations using traditional minting techniques and innovative design technology.
The Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland commemorative coin collection was created in collaboration with the V&A.

About The Royal Mint
The Royal Mint has an unbroken history of minting British coinage dating back over 1,100 years. Based in the Tower of London for over 500 years, by 1812 The Royal Mint had moved out of the Tower to premises on London’s Tower Hill. In 1967 the building of a new Royal Mint began on its current site in South Wales, UK, to accommodate the minting of UK decimal coinage.
Today, The Royal Mint is the world’s largest export mint, supplying coins to the UK and overseas countries. The Royal Mint has also diversified into a number of other complementary businesses, building on the values that have been at the heart of the organisation throughout its history - authenticity, security, precious metals, craftsmanship and design:
Precious Metals
Throughout history, The Royal Mint’s name has been synonymous with precious metals and bullion. The organisation trades physical and digital precious metal worldwide and has a global network of distributor partners.
Consumer coin division
The organisation runs a thriving commemorative coin business, gifting, and a collector services division retailing historic coins, an authentication and valuation service and secure storage.
The Royal Mint Experience
The Royal Mint entered the tourism business in 2016 when it opened its popular visitor centre, The Royal Mint Experience, at its home in Llantrisant, South Wales. The attraction welcomes around 100,000 visitors a year.
