The 2009 commemorative £2 coin honours the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth in 1759. Its reverse design features handwritten lines from Auld Lang Syne, one of Burns’ most celebrated works, widely recognized as a song sung during New Year celebrations across English-speaking countries. The verse, written in Burns’ native Scots dialect, includes the inscription: “We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet for auld lang syne.” The coin’s edge bears the phrase “Should auld acquaintance be forgot.”

This coin marked a first in British numismatic history by featuring a design solely based on handwriting—an apt tribute to Burns, whose life and legacy were defined by his words. Burns himself once remarked that he began writing poetry when he fell in love, and his passion for expression continued throughout his short life, leaving behind an enduring body of work. Born on January 25, 1759, and passing away at just 37 years old in 1796, Burns is celebrated annually on his birthday with Burns Suppers. These events feature readings of his poetry, including Address to a Haggis, and traditional Scottish fare like haggis, accompanied by toasts with whisky.

Over two and a half centuries later, Robert Burns remains one of Scotland’s most beloved cultural icons, with his works continuing to inspire and resonate worldwide.
