Historic Coins

The First £1 Million Coin

Today, we are one of the United Kingdom’s leading coin finder and valuation services. Recently, our experts sourced a rare Edward VIII Sovereign from the United States for a private buyer in the UK and when it sold for £1 million, it set a new record for the sale of a British coin. It is one of the most coveted coins in the world and belongs to a small collection of ‘trial sets’ created following Edward VIII’s ascension to the throne in January 1936. As Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson, the coins were never released to the public. In addition to the rarity of the coin, it is also unique as Edward VIII broke with the tradition of the monarch’s heads facing in opposite direction to the predecessor's, as he preferred his left profile.

Invest

Make Your Investment Precious

Few investments have the beauty and timeless appeal of gold. Its periodic symbol – Au – comes from the name ‘Aurora’, who was the Roman goddess of the shining dawn. Since its discovery more than 5,000 years ago, this most precious of metals has been traded and treasured by civilisations. From the tombs of the pharaohs to the mythical city of El Dorado, gold has threaded its way through our collective history and culture. Easy to buy and sell, gold has a track record for returns over the long term and is valued by investors as a way of balancing risk against other investments such as stocks and shares. With a range of gold investment options now available from The Royal Mint, it has never been easier to get into gold.

Masterworks

The Three Graces Remastered

When Benedetto Pistrucci’s designs for the new half-crown, sixpence and shillings of 1816 attracted criticism, an ambitious young engraver saw a chance to make a name for himself. Funding the venture privately, William Wyon RA produced The Three Graces, a work of consummate skill that announced the arrival of an extraordinary new talent. Inspired by neoclassical sculptures of the Daughters of Zeus, Wyon recast them as figures representing the nations of Great Britain and Ireland, newly bound by the Act of Union 1801. Only around 50 pattern coins were struck and the design never entered circulation. Drawing on our unrivalled legacy as the original maker of British coins, The Great Engravers Collection continued with a homage to Wyon’s early career masterpiece, using modern striking techniques to breathe new life into the design. More than 200 years after the original was struck, this masterful work was realised on a stunning five-kilo coin as part of our unique Masterworks collection.

Celebrate

From a Secret Agent to a World Icon

A stunning seven-kilo gold Proof coin – part of our unique Masterworks collection – topped off the launch of our James Bond Collection, which includes commemorative coins and bars. One of a kind, it was the largest coin with the highest face value produced by The Royal Mint. Featuring a design by Laura Clancy – a product designer at The Royal Mint – it formed part of our James Bond Special Issue range, which also included a two-kilo gold Proof, gold Proof kilo and five-ounce gold Proof and silver Proof coins. Laura placed the Aston Martin DB5 at the centre of her design, which also features the famous BMT 216A number plate and gun barrel surround. A combination of traditional engraving methods and modern techniques were used to produce the piece and a CNC engraving machine carefully cut the design onto the coin. Finally, it was polished by hand to ensure the finish was to the highest possible standard and areas of the design were frosted using laser cutters, which gave it a matt finish.
