Coins-and-the-Sea-at-The-Royal-Mint-Experience

  • New ‘Coins and the Sea’ exhibition dives into the history of coins and their journey across the high seas.
  • Open from Saturday 25th May, visitors will be able to explore the new unique treasures raised from shipwrecks.
  • The award-winning tourist attraction is also set to host a series of activities over May half term.

A new, swashbuckling exhibition has been unveiled by The Royal Mint Experience, in time for May Half Term.

From shanties to shipwrecks, the ‘Coins and the Sea’ exhibition will dive into the history of coins and their journey across the high seas, showcasing sunken treasure of concreted coins. Explorers will sail on an historic voyage learning how coins were used in international trade – and by pirates!

Ships have long appeared on coins produced by The Royal Mint. The first, struck in the mid-1340s and depicting Edward III’s golden noble, will be on display at the award-winning tourist attraction. The coin was introduced with the second coinage of King Edward III between 1344 and 1346, portraying the King on a ship holding a sword and shield.

Dan Johnson, Visitor Attraction Manager at The Royal Mint said: “We are thrilled to open our new exhibition at The Royal Mint Experience. The team at The Royal Mint Museum have identified unique and exciting artefacts to showcase in this collection, and we look forward to taking visitors on a discovery of hidden treasures.”

Hannah Spruce, Exhibitions Manager at The Royal Mint Museum said: “It has been a pleasure to work closely with a number of museums and individuals to bring the Coins and the Sea exhibition to life. We tell the important story of our history on the high seas, and the impact of our maritime activity on the world as we know it today.”

The Royal Mint Experience will also be hosting a series of events to celebrate May half term. Further information about the half term events and the Coins of the Sea exhibition can be found on The Royal Mint website.
