Gruffalos Child

  • The Gruffalo’s Child wanders onto her very own 50p, in celebration of the charming story’s 20th anniversary.
  • The design features original artwork created by Axel Sheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo’s Child book and has been brought to life by Royal Mint craftspeople.
  • The new 50p follows the success of The Gruffalo’s coins in 2019.

From the deep dark wood, the Gruffalo’s Child has wandered onto her very own 50p for the first time, in celebration of the enchanting story’s 20th anniversary. The new collectible follows on from The Royal Mint’s popular coin which celebrated the world’s most loved woodland monster, The Gruffalo, in 2019.

Struck at The Royal Mint’s headquarters in South Wales, the 50 pence piece features an original illustration by Axel Sheffler of the brave Gruffalo’s Child in the wintery setting of the deep dark wood, alongside the quick-thinking little Mouse. A selection of the coins will feature colour, bringing the characters and story to life on the small canvas of a 50p in intricate detail.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said, “The heartwarming tale of The Gruffalo’s Child has captivated readers since its release twenty years ago, and this year, the curious little monster finds a permanent home on a 50 pence piece. Brought to life by Royal Mint expert craftspeople, this coin captures the true essence of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved story in beautiful detail. We hope fans of the book admire the design as much as we do.”

First published in 2004, The Gruffalo’s Child is the sequel to Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s iconic children’s book The Gruffalo. The Gruffalo’s Child is a firm favourite in the world of children’s literature and has not only entertained families for decades but provided children and adults alike with memories that will last a lifetime. It has earned countless awards along the way, including the National Book Awards Children's Book of the Year in 2005.

Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child books said, “It’s wonderful to see the Gruffalo's Child follow in her father’s footsteps by featuring on her very own 50p coin. I'm so happy that she is being celebrated in this way and I hope that fans of the book will treasure this coin as a long-lasting memento of the 20th anniversary year.”

Axel Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child books said, “I feel very honoured to have yet another coin celebrating the Gruffalo, and now even his offspring!”
The Gruffalo’s Child collectible 50p coin will be available in a range of precious metal finishes with colour editions available on The Royal Mint’s website. This is a collectible coin and will not be entering general circulation.

From 1st October, fans will be able to strike their very own Gruffalo’s Child 50p at The Royal Mint’s visitor attraction, the Royal Mint Experience, based in Llantrisant South Wales. Tickets can be booked via The Royal Mint’s website.

Celebrating with The Royal Mint

For over a thousand years The Royal Mint has marked the moments that changed the world on coins - from coronations to conflict, from commemorations to celebrations. The designs are captured on commemorative coins, minted in a range of metals.  Commemorative coins do not always enter circulation but give collectors the chance to purchase coins to keep and cherish.  Recent themes have included David Bowie, Winnie the Pooh, Decimalisation and Team GB. Each commemorative coin is carefully struck up to three times in order to create a superbly detailed finish, and ensuring each one meets the standards The Royal Mint is famous for.
